Honeymoon
Maudie and I spent nine days of November in Puerto Rico for our honeymoon. I wanted to do the whole tropical island cliche, but she didn’t want any long flights. We settled on Puerto Rico, which definitely lived up to its slogan, “la isla del encanto” (the island of enchantment).
We stayed for a week in a secluded villa near the edge of rainforest. The villa offered lush vegetation, great views of the island, and front row seats to the chorus of coquis—tiny Puerto Rican frogs that sing a little chirping song throughout the night. We took day trips to various places and activities around the island, including:
- El Yunque National Forest, where we spent five hours hiking to the top of the rainforest mountain
- Camuy Caverns–the third largest cave system in the world
- The Arecibo Observatory–home of the largest radio telescope, featured in Contact and Goldeneye
- Sailing with Erin Go Braugh Charters
- Luquillo Beach
- Kayaking and swimming in a bioluminescent bay with Las Tortugas Adventures (completely magical, and impossible to explain)
- Ponce, “the pearl of the south”
We spent the last couple days in El Convento, a beautiful hotel in the heart of Old San Juan. We enjoyed (despite the heat) many strolls around the city, which was absolutely breathtaking.
